The Google Maps Scraper is a Python automation tool that extracts business data including names, addresses, phone numbers, websites, ratings, and reviews from Google Maps. It's designed for lead generation (finding potential clients), competitor analysis (tracking competitor locations), and market research (understanding business density in an area).
Why Scrape Google Maps?
Google Maps has the most comprehensive business directory on the planet. For sales teams, it's a goldmine of leads. For market researchers, it's a dataset of business locations, ratings, and customer feedback. The official Google Places API is expensive and rate-limited. Scraping is faster, cheaper, and provides more data. Of course, it requires responsible use and respecting robots.txt.
Scraping Technique
I used Selenium with a headless Chrome browser to navigate Google Maps. The scraper searches for a query (e.g., 'coffee shops in Seattle'), scrolls the results to trigger infinite loading, and extracts data from the HTML. I implemented random delays between requests to mimic human behavior and avoid detection. The tool supports pagination and can scrape thousands of businesses in a single run.
Data Extraction & Parsing
Each business listing contains multiple data points: name, address, phone, website, category, rating, review count, hours, and photos. I use BeautifulSoup to parse the HTML and regex to clean messy data (e.g., phone numbers in different formats). The data is structured into JSON or CSV format, ready for CRM import or analysis.
Handling Rate Limits & CAPTCHAs
Google Maps has anti-bot measures. To avoid blocks, I rotate user agents, implement random scroll speeds, and add delays between searches. For CAPTCHAs, I use 2Captcha API for automated solving when necessary. The scraper includes retry logic. If a request fails, it waits and retries up to 3 times before moving on.
